God blessed Holy Mother Church with the life and works of Gregory the Great.  Gregory was born into a noble Roman family.  He was second to none in his education and took the position of Prefect of Rome when he was only thirty-three.  In time, Gregory converted his family estate into a monastery where he devoted himself to solitude and prayer. Against the desire of Gregory, he was elected Pope in 590. One of his first actions was to write a series of letters disavowing others from seeking to achieve positions of authority in The Church, especially that of the Pope. Among the greatest works of Pope Gregory was The Book of Pastoral Rule, written to guide bishops and priests in their expected personal, intellectual, and moral behaviors in executing their offices. This work was so excellent that the Byzantine emperor translated it and gave it to every bishop in his empire.  Let us ask the intercession of Pope St. Gregory the Great, for the bishops and priests of today.
